The cool, crisp air of the mountain evoked memories of falls past. The scent of pine along the dusty paths conjured thoughts of summer long runs through Mammoth Lakes, California. The sounds of a rushing river winding its way down from the Himalayan peaks, calming the atmosphere and eliciting moments of pure harmony.

Barkot’s Terrace farm communities with vistas of the Himalayas
As I walked through the terrace farm communities nestled among the Himalayas, each with breathtaking vistas and access to fresh, cold mountain water, my mind recognized the difference between essential and non-essential. The days simply passed by as I indulged in satisfying creative outlets, writing, editing photos and the occasional doodle or painting.

Pleasant community vibe of Barkot
I was perfectly content staring out the window at the towering mountains, with no task needing fulfilled, no one to satisfy. My thoughts arrived sparingly as I simply enjoyed the quiet mind. The hotel owner came to my bedroom window, gesturing with a food motion to his mouth, asking if I wanted food or tea. The mentality of a tourist town was so different from an actual community.
As I walked through the streets of Barkot, attracting curious glances, but no one trying to lure me in with obtrusive calls. I walked down a path, across a bridge, into a truly village setting – my watch step counter dictating that I keep going. I witnessed men and women hauling large bundles of veggies on their backs, one woman guiding two massive bulls to vegetation, and children carrying pales of water. A little girl struggled to pump water from a hand pump, and as she looked up and said, “Hi, How are you?” I turned around and waved. Days of joyful wandering, wondering why I would ever want to do anything different.

The natural beauty of the mountain, the simplicity of life in the village, and the kindness of the people all made for a truly harmonious experience. The rushing river and the scent of pine, the terrace farm communities and the peaceful days, all made me wish to stay here forever. These were the perfect days, where the mind is quiet, and the soul is at peace.
